Johnny English Strikes Again

You probably have to be British to appreciate the absurdity of English slapstick humor. Luckily I am!

Roman J. Israel, Esq.

½

The critics have unjustifiably maligned this movie. It is a tour-de-force on the part of Denzel Washington in a long line of other magnificent portrayals. It is not without flaws but Denzel's performance compels you to continue watching despite whatever they may be. It's no blockbuster in its appeal to mass audiences but it is a much better movie that the ratings suggest.

The Old Man & the Gun

This may very well be the most overrated movie on the planet. Are we supposed to think it's cute because Robert Redford is 80 and retiring, or because the movie character is a lovable charming bank robber?? Both possibilities are ludicrous. It's just not a very good movie. Period.

The sorrow of it is almost unwatchable. It's like an apocalyptic sci-fi movie from the future however it's real and it's now. It makes one ashamed to admit to be a human being. It's difficult to believe the treatment of humans by humans. I'd say inhumane but that's an odd word that seems to mean it's conduct below human capability - when there's no such situation as inhumane - we have proved throughout history and present that there's no horrible treatment we won't do to our fellow man. It's difficult to watch and everyone on the planet should feel a sense of guilt - Bravo Ai WeiWei for showing us ourselves - putting a mirror to our inhumanity.

The Highwaymen

This is another one of those bizarre incidents where the audience appreciates this movie way, way more than the Tomatometers. It was a very good movie - well acted - well paced - told an interesting story and kept one's interest all the way through. It was criticized for being like a TV movie and not a theatre level production - BALDERDASH - This was a very good movie on all levels - Woody and Kevin Costner were both excellent - well worth the effort to watch.
