The Salt of the Earth

Wim Wenders' thoughtful documentation of the birth, life, spiritual death and ultimately the resurrection of gifted Brazilian photographer Sebastião Salgado. Like all of Wenders' work, restorative and hopeful.

Hyena Road
Hyena Road (2016)

A compelling plot with engaging tactical action sequences but the Rossif Sutherlund, Christine Horne sub-plot bogs down at every level. Gross and Nabil Elouahabi as Haji Babba play off each other well. Visually stunning.

The Fate of the Furious

From the sublime (Havana's Malecón) to the ridiculous (Siberian Icepack).

The Lost City of Z

Lost somewhere between Dr. Jones and Don Lope de Aguirre.

Lion (2016)

Sunny Pawar's young Saroo hooks us immediately and reels us in. His magnificent five-year-old smile demands that we see this story through to the end - in spite of muddled dialogue and a poorly defined supporting cast. A weepy Dev Patel convinces us of nothing, Rooney Mara can't seem to locate her character and Nicole Kidman is barely audible. Only Saroo's childhood flashbacks rescue the second half of this film.

This inspiring story may have fared better in more experienced hands; where is Danny Boyle when we need him? From the aptly named "See-Saw Films".
