Zatoichi The Outlaw
6 months ago via Rotten Tomatoes
½

This was the first of the Zato series to come under the banner of Katsu Productions. Katsu-san sings the Zatoichi-theme for the first time. This is also an unusual film in that it makes a social statement in favour of non-violence and cooperative business being superior than the traditional models. Watch for the hero to be carried triumphantly to the showdown by the villagers.

Doctor Syn
Doctor Syn (1937)

Not nearly as good a script as Disney's version. Arliss is good as the kindly vicar who is publicly tight-lipped on any subject except meeting, and giving last rights, to a famous pirate. Of course, several of the villagers know all about his night life, but they wouldn't dare breathe a word. Set in the mid-1700's, this story shows that many Brits weren't treated any better than the Colonies. Filled with imposing soldiers, taxmen, smugglers, and a mysterious orphan, now grown into a desirable woman, whose past holds the key to many secrets.

Dr. Syn, Alias the Scarecrow

½

This abridged version was edited down from the 3 part miniseries shown by Disney on TV. Mostly they edited out secondary plot lines - which leaves a choppy interpretation of the aforementioned classic. Both versions are usually available in a 2 disc set, along with a documentary.

Ghidorah, the Three-Headed Monster (San daikaijū: Chikyū saidai no kessen)

½

Adequate outing with a welcome return of Rodan. A nice touch that the underlying story was about Japan trying to protect the rightful heir of another Asian nation.

That Brennan Girl

A gem of it's time, which could easily be remade today.
Society-savvy gal manages to become a war widow & mother, but without the guiding influence of her farm-raised hubby she soon goes astray - and pays personal penalties.
