Maverick (1994)

It could have been great. Three wonderful stars, a clever premise, and beautiful scenery. But the humor is too broad, there is too much caricature, and the movie is too long. Cute, light summer fare, but a real disappointment for what might have been.

A Star Is Born

There is so much that is great about this move! Two riveting performances, great music, beautiful cinematography - and that is only the beginning. The movie has an intensity and a freshness that is wonderful and surprising, coming from a big-budget Hollywood production. It is an impressive feat for Bradley Cooper's directorial debut, and an absolutely unbelievable one for Lady Gaga's first acting role - she was outstanding. Both artists are completely believable, and there is a genuine, fresh quality to their interactions. Yes, it isn't a perfect film, there is a bit of exaggerated emotion and lots of small predictable elements, but this is quibling about what is a great movie.

People Will Talk

This is an odd but deeply interesting and ambitious film. It addresses many important topics: political correctness, witch hunts, unwanted pregnancy, friendship, professional conduct, the role of psychology in healing, and others. Yet it also toggles among comedy, drama and romance in an unsettling way, and descends into an odd preachiness at times. It's tackling of adult themes requires intelligence and engagement from the audience. It is a dense film, and I'd like to watch it again.

The French Connection

One of the greatest films ever in its genre, this is an intense, realistic, tough glimpse at cops and criminals and the gritty worlds of 1960s-70s New York and Marseille. Gene Hackman seems like he was born for this role - what a great performance.

Crazy Heart
Crazy Heart (2009)

This is a sweet and believable film about real people. The story is anything but original, and yet it is done very nicely, with kind, genuine performances and a majestic Jeff Bridges. One very good move is that the director and screenwriter put most of the exaggeration and cliches at the beginning of the movie in order for us to "get' the characters. In doing so, the movie got more interesting and realistic as it went on.
