Wynonna Earp: Season 1 (2016)

Critic Consensus: What Wynonna Earp lacks in originality it more than makes up for in gritty, silly, supernatural fun.

It's all a bit fuzzy, but then it's all in good fun. Television has plenty of room for strong female characters. Welcome to the party, Wynonna.

I turned on the pilot, expecting some rollicking Western shoot 'em up supernatural entertainment. I made it through about 20 minutes.

The first season was wildly uneven, skipping from good Lost Girl-like fun to gruesome Hostel-like torture porn-but all of it shot beautifully because apparently Canada is adept at making two things: maple syrup and cinematographers.

It's deliciously funny, super empowering, just plain smart television.

A show that feels like Jessica Jones and Bo Dennis had a super Canadian baby, designated Buffy Summers her godmother, and raised her deep in the heart of Texas.

Audience Reviews for Wynonna Earp: Season 1

Loosely based on a graphic novel, Wynonna Earp is a convoluted supernatural western. Season 1 follows Wyatt Earp's great granddaughter, Wynonna, as she returns to her hometown to face off with the resurrected spirits of the men that Wyatt killed; which are bound to the Ghost River Triangle by a curse. Melanie Scrofano gives a strong performance as the lead, and Tim Rozon has a certain charm as the rascally immoral Doc Holliday. But the writing isn't very good; particularly the relationship dramas, which are obvious and pandering. Also, the mythology of the Earp Curse and the Revenants is hard to follow. And the special effects and makeup for the Revenants aren't that good either. A generic, third rate fantasy series, Wynonna Earp delivers a rather weak first season.
