Critic Consensus: The Village commendably attempts to affirm the bonds between neighbors in an urban community, but the series' overeagerness to wring tears from viewers will most likely only prompt them to roll their eyes.

News & Interviews for The Village: Season 1
It's a low-key sort of fantasy, the idea of one-time strangers becoming a found family in an urban jungle. But fantasy stories have a way of feeding the soul.
Treacly, by-the-numbers prime-time tear-jerker that even Brooklyn and a good cast can't elevate. And viewers won't mind in the least.
The Village has no interest in being a decent series; its only interest is in using emotional manipulation to gaslight its viewers into believing that The Village is trying to say something profound about the human condition. It is not.
It will have to take a little bit more than attempting to induce tears to be as impactful as the series that it is getting compared to.
