Peele and his colleagues are attempting to be socially relevant but much of it feels old.

There's an unsteadiness to this return to that certain dimension of sight, sound, and, of course, mind that dulls whatever impact it intends.

If there's anything we should expect The Twilight Zone to provide, it's killer endings. Yet for various reasons, almost every one of these first ten episodes stumbled over the finish line.

Staying true to the ethos of The Twilight Zone, the episodes are free-standing and timeless. They are, nevertheless, unforgivably long.

That premise is essentially the entire episode. Maybe that's all an episode of The Twilight Zone needs to go for, but it's also part of why I don't often gravitate toward these anthology shows.

Peele's "Twilight Zone" feels neither like the best of Peele nor much like "The Twilight Zone." It's a mismatch of talents that, in the four episodes provided to critics, falls short of justifying its presence.

Reboot of '60s sci-fi classic is overlong and underwhelming.

This isn't really a reboot; it doesn't even qualify as fan fiction. With the exception of one superior episode, "Replay," it's hard to conceive that an artist as prodigiously talented and thoughtful as Peele is creatively involved at all.

Perhaps, like "Black Mirror" on Netflix, true fans will find the best episode of "The Twilight Zone" and obsess about that until the next obsession takes over. For the time being, though, the message we're taking away is that there's only one Rod Serling.

The first four episodes are all bad, a mess of sleepy conceits grasping toward topicality with on-the-nose dialogue spoken by boring characters. A couple sharp performances can't triumph against nonstop plot contrivance.

The new Twilight Zone could have profited from... paring down these bloated exercises in excess. They drag along, and even the in-jokes grow tedious, precisely because they are so relentlessly and so artlessly tossed into the mix.
April 1, 2019
This Twilight doesn't feel like a relic, but it also doesn't feel vital, or at least consistently excellent, enough to justify dusting off the title yet again.

Serling's formula doesn't have the freshness it did 60 years ago, and the creators of the new incarnation haven't quite figured out how to address that.
April 2, 2019
...often short on surprise and subtlety.

Despite all the twists and turns, the journey feels like your boat across the River Styx has snagged itself on the carcass of a '59 Buick.

I appreciate what Jordan Peele is trying to do with the update Twilight Zone, but so far, the payoffs have not been worth the effort.
April 1, 2019
Does not have nearly enough Jordan Peele in it.
May 2, 2019
So far, the scripts have been a disappointment, despite some effective choices in lighting, sound design and camera work.
April 1, 2019
Not one of the four previewed episodes fully hits the mark established by the classic Serling series. They're too long, too slow to develop, and -- for the most part -- much too predictable.
April 1, 2019
The Twilight Zone desperately needs Peele to take the reins, but at this point it's probably too late.
