Netflix's new teen science fiction drama The Society riffs on Lord of the Flies without treating children as some sort of mysterious alien brood.

What works most in the favor of The Society is the frustration it builds in a viewer. This is not a complaint, it's a compliment.

The Society is similarly well worth trying on for size, as much for its wit and resonance as its grabby storylines. It may not be revolutionary, but as the best teen drama currently out there it makes a stirring argument for starting over.

[The Society] feels raw and authentic despite its fantastical concept, and it's doing really interesting things with its storytelling and characterisation.

The Society, while far from perfect, holds its own in this crowded market and does exactly what it says on the tin.

A top-notch drama about youth facing the challenges of citizenship, community, and freedom.

The Society is insanely addictive, a mix of not just The Walking Dead but Lord of the Flies and M. Night Shyamalan's Fox series Wayward Pines.

The Society is a compelling, haunting drama that is really all about power.

The Society revels in hammy mystery tropes and slapstick religious symbolism.

The cast are good, and frequently prove they are the main attraction for the ongoing plot. Despite the interesting mystery and narrative being shunned later in the show, the set-up is extremely well done, and incites a lot of intrigue.

A fresh take on utopia and anarchy under a teen driven society. Great performances and a decent script make this a decent and bingeworthy watch.

Language, violence, substance abuse in dark teen mystery.

Although some of the teen drama aspect is predictable, the show puts a lot of thought into the societal element, and frequently inspires trains of thought.

Is The Society a show about sort-of whiny privileged kids in an overfamiliar YA set up? Yes. Absolutely, there's no denying that. But it's a pretty damn good one.

All of this and more makes for a brilliantly average, perfectly imperfect show for bouncing teens, cankered fortysomethings and nothing in between. A joy.

The Society contains not a single interesting character or plot line. Its young cast is so unmemorable that it's impossible to recall which one is which.
May 13, 2019
At a certain point the drama does get addictive, as the show eventually reveals what it's really about: a grim reckoning with the fact that these teens have had to grow up too fast.
