A compelling season finale.

The Handmaid's Tale is often quite a powerful show, given how it deals with themes and topics that can often be quite shocking, timely, and emotionally-charged...

A smart, startling, topical turn...
July 29, 2019
The Handmaid's Tale continues to excel as one of the most inventive, thought-provoking and never-less-than-plausible dystopian dramas to reach our screens in decades.

The most successful, disturbing, searingly well-shot episode to date of The Handmaid's Tale.
July 19, 2019
This show's plotting continues to strike fearful, zeitgeist bell tolls of gender repression, authoritarianism and popular backlash.
July 15, 2019
One of the most chilling aspects of the superb third series of The Handmaid's Tale has been the way new horrors are evoked.

Trust nobody. And wait until you discover what Lydia's backstory is.
July 10, 2019
The Handmaid's Tale fails to incorporate historical parallels to Gilead into the narrative, erasing black women from the very stories of their own subjugation.

The show has spent three seasons building out an alternate world. What a shame it would be if it never developed the imagination or ambition to really explore it.

The newly arrived season three appears to lack a sense of direction, spending an inordinate amount of time on close-ups of its heroine's alternately inscrutable, furious or resolute face.

Sheesh but it's good: Margaret Atwood's characters have taken on a life of their own way past the book, which is surely the bellwether of any decent dys- or utopia.
June 14, 2019
The Handmaid's Tale is vicious, gripping, biting, political drama at its best, but I don't think it's an exaggeration to say that this is a show that hates America. It's a wonder there's not more fuss.

The show needs a little less conversation and a little more action, please.

Hulu's landmark show has veered from illuminating, cathartic and misery porn over the past two seasons. Season three of the show thankfully offers something new: hope.

From a perpetually flat June making breathtakingly stupid decisions to the ongoing cosmic joke that is this show's writer/director gender breakdown, it's hard to keep rooting for "The Handmaid's Tale."

Having hit the reset button once, The Handmaid's Tale shamelessly hits it a second time, only to give us more of the same tedious, repetitive beats, albeit it without the beatings.

If you're invested in the original story, it's worth watching to find out how it unfolds this season.

The show still looks great... But the logical inconsistencies are piling up faster than the worn-out bodies in the Colonies.

All the familiar ingredients are there: the rising dread, the tension, the horror... But for those of you who read this for trigger warnings and reassurance: it's dialed back some of the terror.
