Critic Consensus: The Great British Baking Show returns with a new crop of amateur bakers who are not only talented but are also incredibly humble and sweet.
Tv Season Info
Many were surprised when such a relatively humble programme made it to the top. But perhaps it would have been more surprising if it hadn't. We like things that make us happy and that bring people together.
What makes Bake Off more fascinating to watch than shows of a similar format is that the contestants are judged on genuine skill.
Mel and Sue reminded us again why the recent American version of Bake Off failed massively - because they weren't in it.
Sure, we might have basically known that Frances Quinn had won due to a flurry of late bets on the outsider, yet that didn't stop series four from having a whole heap of controversies that cemented its place as the show everyone had to watch.
One of the criticisms commonly levelled at the show is that not much really happens. Not true! It's the dozens of tiny, complex, yeasty microdramas that hold it all together.
