Perhaps Lex's presence is the necessary price to truly push the Leviathan arc forward at last, but it's hard not to feel as though his increased presence has somehow taken something away from the other Luthor on Supergirl's canvas.

While all this backstory made for a great episode and connected a lot of dots, I can't help but wish that we had known about some of Lex's plans earlier. It would have made the previous episodes a lot more enjoyable.

Those missteps are easier to forgive when the character stuff in "Deus Lex Machina" is so strong and the performances are so uniformly great.

"Dues Lex Machina" fills in the gaps to show us how the villain's been positioning himself all season long. And like that episode, this one's great fun - particularly because Jon Cryer is, as always, such a blast as Lex.
