Here, though, sarcasm is what passes for middle-class frankness, where everything comes with a wry sense of detachment and, in Nick Hornby's script, a stagy way with words.

It is funny, but not boastful about it.

State of the Union worked because it was beautifully written by Nick Hornby, handsomely shot by Stephen Frears, and who doesn't like looking at Rosamund Pike sipping white wine?

State of the Union feels voyeuristic, not in a guilty pleasure or shameful way, but in a fascinating, relatable, human relationship study way.

[Nick] Hornby has created a cleverly structured two-handed play in ten segments, lush with domestic hum-drummery, in which we will never see them in that therapist's room.

The first two episodes of this 10-parter about a middle-class married couple chatting in a pub on their way to counselling sessions were perfectly fine, with nuanced dialogue and fine playing by the leads, but they were also very slight.

State of the Union is a sketch of a mid-life marriage in crisis. It doesn't need to be anything else, and perhaps this is where the short form is working in its favor.

Let's hope Pike manages to squeeze in a few more comedies, because she can not only hold her own with O'Dowd, she's fun to watch while she does, even if at some points it feels like the same old material.

These stories are as rewarding as they are withholding. By showing only slices of the protagonists' lives, the audience is tasked with looking out for changes in their dynamic. It's like a game of Spot the Difference.

It's so good, in fact, you're left wishing there was more; more time, more settings, more to the story than just the simple structure these professionals excel within.

It is as honest and multi-faceted an examination and appreciation of marriage as you could hope to find (as well as an astonishingly cliche-free one).

Pike and O'Dowd seemed to relax in to their roles; their ease with one another looked much more like that of a 15-year marriage than a read-through and a tech rehearsal.

O'Dowd is his usual clever shaggy bear self; Pike quite a comedy find, even if you wonder, up until about halfway through, how the two could ever have got together in the first place, let alone survive marriage until one had to scratch that 15-year-itch.

Fueled by grounded, authentic performances by O'Dowd and Pike, "State Of The Union" asks compelling questions.

As written by Nick Hornby, it's full of funny and snide dialogue and stars Rosamund Pike and Chris O'Dowd are more than up for delivering it.

Excellent and experimental... In a TV landscape where episodes and seasons can overstay their welcome, State of the Union turns out to be the perfect length.

Fans of dialogue-heavy, character-driven storytelling will be intrigued, but the redundancy of the setting renders "State of the Union" less bingeable.

But even when the writing feels a little vague or forced, Pike and O'Dowd make the scenes work.

Ten ten-minute films in which a couple grapples with the difficulties of maintaining an intimate relationship in our hurried times.
