Space Force: Season 1 Reviews

When our world is so mad, it's hard to then go and write a comedy that tries to be madder than real life actually is.

In space no one can hear you stink.

So strange and ill-conceived and ill-timed that not even Carell's avuncular bonhomie can save it. For all its cinematic trappings, Space Force is a series with a single joke running through it, and that joke is American idiocy.

Despite a cast and crew with the right stuff, the Netflix show isn't quite great, just pretty good.

"Space Force," we do not have lift off.

Space Force carries such an impressive payload, it's a shame the actual show isn't better. As is, this too-broad parody has sporadic moments but consistently feels like it's trying way too hard to achieve liftoff, like an "Airplane!" movie gone wrong.

Based on early evidence the series can't settle into military/political satire, madcap family comedy or a merry-go-round about Naird's love/hate relationship with the top scientist on the project.

Space Force is not exactly embarrassing -- everyone involved is too talented -- but it is shockingly unfunny for a show made by people who are so talented.

The highest accolades belong, of course, to the writers of this comedy of sparkling sophistication, chimpanzees included, and wit that runs deep.
May 28, 2020
Like that rocket left sitting at the Kennedy Space Center, Space Force just can't get off the ground.
May 28, 2020
Lashings of technobabble aside, none of the practical or scientific material in the show seems remotely true or plausible, especially the speed at which things are supposed to happen.
May 28, 2020
"Space Force's" failures may appear to be critical, but let's not cancel the whole program just yet. There are parts worth saving.
May 28, 2020
"Force" is slickly produced with an A-list cast, but all those pretty people and sets can't hide often unfunny scripts and clashing tones.

The saving grace of the show could have been Kudrow, who, as always, can make you laugh anytime she wants... But she's not onscreen much, and her character is barely sketched
May 28, 2020
But there is a lack of vision in the show they devised, as it veers awkwardly between farce and drama, spoof and romcom. It qualifies as the year's biggest TV disappointment so far.

The massive irony is that this [Space Force] doesn't seem like it has some grandiose plan either. But it's telling of its team's charisma that despite many things going wrong, Space Force is still a success.

"Space Force" isn't toothless. But it could use more bite.
May 27, 2020
As in The Office, Carell dilutes his buffoonery with humanity, and Naird is more likeable than he ought to be.... But the series struggles to get out from under the biggest joke of all, which is that it is based on a real US government department.

To be fair, the series gets better as it goes along.

Maybe the problem isn't just the medium. Maybe Peak TV has changed popular tastes...Or maybe Space Force was just never a viable idea outside the boardroom.
May 26, 2020
Together, Carell and Malkovich forge a charismatic pair that could carry even more episodes than they already do... Also helping to elevate the serviceable comedy is the gleaming production itself.

It works a little harder for its jibes than its underpowered space comedy rival Avenue 5, and its essential set up -- the mayhem that ensues when mankind imposes puny attempts at order on chaos -- is the biggest joke of all. Cosmic, in fact.

Seeing all that money onscreen is rarely funny in and of itself. The stylistic touchstone seems to be in the farcical vibe of Dr. Strangelove, but everything just winds up feeling frantic and labored.

Even when the show's jokes aren't particularly sharp, its performances always are. But when Space Force tries to go bigger or more inspiring with its plot, it buckles under the weight of its own ambition.
May 26, 2020
What the show lacks is any kind of comedic vision, or even a fully-formed concept. If space is a vacuum, "Force" is a kind of TV black hole: A-list stars and lots of Netflix money go in, and what comes out is a big old nothing.

Other than a general, "Isn't this a wacky thing a wacky president thought up!" perspective, I don't know what the show thinks is funny about the idea of a Space Force. And without that, it's hard to see where Mark is supposed to be funny.
