Basgallop's creation is certainly something you've never seen before and if it doesn't get a second season (or was meant to be done in one) you may walk away slightly dissatisfied, but you'll know you went on one hell of a ride.
M. Night Shyamalan's disturbing new thriller Servant on Apple TV+ is much more than a haunting tale about a mysterious nanny and a grieving couple. Servant does an excellent job making the viewer paranoid throughout.
Scary and sublime, M Night Shyamalan's Apple show is about the rich at war with the poor, about superstition clashing with rationality, and about how, when confronted with things we do not quite understand, we react with fear.
Like the show, her character remains opaque for longer than it should, but the dynamics introduced by Shyamalan and creator Tony Basgallop are rich in thematic potential, even when it feels as if there are too many of them.
Servant isn't a knock your socks off hit like, Netflix's Haunting of Hill House, but it is a show worth checking out as something not splashy but still very well crafted and that wears its desire to succeed on its sleeve
Servant could have been a more straightforward tale about grief and power and class differences, but, to its credit, the series wants to be something a little different, something that excels in making its audience as uncomfortable as possible.
