It's period drama, unfolding at a period pace. Whether you get hooked probably depends on how you like Claire [Caitriona Balfe]. It's hard not to.

Outlander is beautifully shot throughout, which somewhat makes up for some of the early tedium. It may not ever rise to the level of enthralling. But by the second episode, the story at hand is flexing a firmer grip.

Always fascinating and often quite odd, mad, and weird, Outlander has the most peculiar mix of gothic horror, swashbuckling adventure, magical fantasy, and romance you're likely to experience on TV.

A promising period drama/time travel adventure is in serious danger of being smothered to death.

Since most of us can't travel through time, it's probably best not to spend too much of it on Outlander.

Audience Reviews for Outlander: Season 1

Incredible daring and full of adventure, Season 1 of Outlander is a fresh and exciting series from Ronald D. Moore. Based on a bestseller book series, the show follows a nurse named Claire Randall who, while vacationing in Scotland on a second honeymoon with her husband following the end of World War II, is magically transported back to the 18th century where she becomes entangled in the Scottish uprising against the British. Co-produced by Ira Steven Behr, the show is especially well-crafted with a remarkably gritty and authentic look and feel. And the writing is quite impressive, avoiding a lot of the clichés and tropes of time travel. Yet the show's strengths are also its weaknesses, as the grittiness can often turn ugly and vulgar. And the overarching story doesn't seem to have a clear direction. Season 1 of Outlander is extraordinarily ambitious, but it has limited appeal due to its crudity and explicit sex and violence.
