The series visibly struggles to spin an enveloping atmosphere around its ideas.

Though the series feels like it's about to take off at any moment, it struggles to get into gear.

Any flickering glimmer of quality gets smothered by a drab visual palette, sluggish plotting and a crushingly dour tone.

Vic's dramatic exits typically lead her to the mysterious bridge, leading her on new adventures - which is interesting, but everything outside of the supernatural elements feels like a wasted opportunity.

NOS4A2 proves too slow and plodding to generate much in the way of tension or genuine scare with regard to its unsettling premise.
May 30, 2019
All that effort does little to make "NOS4A2" compelling television. The stories are disconnected at the outset and Vic's home life is one-note rote.

The weak writing wouldn't be such a problem if the show had an ounce of the visual flourish it so desperately needed to succeed.

NOS4A2 was an opportunity for AMC, an assortment of promising literary kernels that could have really come to life in a different medium. Instead, it's a bridge to nowhere and the only not-so-magical escape is changing the channel.

The most frightening thing about Zachary Quinto's vampire is his gross fingernails, but the rest of the cast kept me watching week to week.

Joe Hill's wholly unique narrative comes to life in mind-bending and touching ways, aided by Mike Patton's unsettling soundscapes.

NOS4A2 is right up my alley... The concept is fascinating, and Vic's powers are a rarity in horror TV.

The premiere doesn't exactly inspire confidence at first glance, but it's possible this a show with promise buried down deep that will take a bit of time to get the ball rolling.

Proved to be a surprisingly savvy adaptation of the source material, backed by strong performances from Quinto, Cummings, Jahkara Smith as Maggie and Ebon Moss-Bachrach as Vic's father. But more importantly, I'm excited to see where it will go from here.

If anything, you are going to have trouble thinking about candy canes and Christmas carols without worrying that a Rolls Royce Wraith may be coming to get you.

It's refreshing in a TV landscape full of complicated antiheroes that the characters with the most interiority in NOS4A2 are the good guys.

NOS4A2's pilot isn't so much a traditional pilot as it is an immersive beginning to one emotionally wrought, harrowing journey ahead for the characters.

[NOS4A2] does a fantastic job of bringing the spirit of [Joe] Hill's story into the series.

N0S4A2 is a very mixed bag of toys, but it's definitely full of more candy canes than coal, especially the deeper that the show gets into its mystery.

There are moments of striking imagery and immersive world-building... but the series' misaligned priorities rarely give you time to soak in the horror before dropping you back into drab dramatics about campus visits and mismanaged taxes.

Cold opens don't get much more chilling than the first scene of AMC's new supernatural horror drama NOS4A2.
