Mrs. Fletcher: Limited Series Reviews

March 11, 2020
A simply brilliant performance by Hahn as a woman who is a fully credible mixture of confidence and insecurity, competencies and inadequacies and - most importantly - who is gradually realising that she contains multitudes.

[Kathryn] Hahn, in various states of duress, undress and dawning possibility, has her own ways of turning generalizations into compelling specifics.

But for all of [Kathryn] Hahn's tremendous skill, her presence isn't enough to paper over the cracks in the series itself, which struggles to find anything bold or new to say about women's sexuality or coming of age later in life.

Plot is Perrotta's strong suit, and the series moves at quite a clip. The network's striptease set-up will, I suspect, hook most viewers.

Mrs. Fletcher is no Big Little Lies regardless of how fetching and magnetic Kathryn Hahn can be in the title role. Granted, the series is not a terrible way to spend one's time either, so long as the viewer is aware of what she's getting into.

The series benefits from two remarkably deft performers, who paint outside the lines of their characters. But in the end, I wanted more -- more insight, more illumination, more interrogation of the differences between sexual freedom and freedom itself.

Unfortunately, we spend almost as much time at college with Brendan, and that's when Mrs. Fletcher shifts tonal gears and becomes a downbeat melodrama about this irredeemable, snide and smug lout.

Tasteful and tame, the miniseries, true to its MILF-y title, is I Love Dick's buttoned-up suburban sister.
October 25, 2019
Mrs. Fletcher unfolds a touching, funny, sometimes deeply sad, and sometimes outrageously horny story of human sexuality.

October 25, 2019
Half a century after women's liberation, with peace between the genders more elusive than ever, Mrs. Fletcher affirms that the bond between moms and their boys is a crucial piece of the puzzle.
October 25, 2019
For a self-contained story, the ending of "Fletcher" is shockingly abrupt and open-ended. It's a hard trick to pull off, and Perotta does it beautifully. The limited series is refreshingly succinct and poignant throughout.

While providing fans of Kathryn Hahn hours of delirium, the seven-part Mrs. Fletcher is a bold, engaging, sexy coming-of-age story that may well prompt viewers to ask: What age?
October 25, 2019
Mrs. Fletcher takes a concept that sounds like a snooze and turns it into an unexpectedly absorbing limited series.
October 25, 2019
Yet for all its satiric wallops, Mrs. Fletcher is deeply humane and for all the shock value in some scenes, it's a thoughtful character study that's gentle rather than acidic.
October 25, 2019
It's content to let Hahn fill each beat, no matter how empty, knowing that if all else fails, there's plenty of enjoyment to be had in watching someone who likes to watch.

"Mrs. Fletcher" deserved better.

"Mrs. Fletcher" is filled with funny and awkward scenes in which the lead character has her world greatly opened, but it is perhaps more memorable (and more unique) as a show about a young man who finds the world is shutting him out.
October 24, 2019
For a story that's supposed to be so intimate and personal, it's also amorphous and unspecific.
October 23, 2019
There's a smart symmetry to Mrs. Fletcher, the superb new HBO limited series from writer-producer Tom Perrotta.
October 22, 2019
It's clear how the two halves of Mrs. Fletcher reflect one another, but one shines so much brighter than the other that it's all you want to look at.

Though it's only seven half-hour episodes, Fletcher gives the excellent ensemble substantive subplots about their own search for acceptance.

Mrs Fletcher promises to become something rather special, an acutely observed show that quietly covers a great deal without ever feeling overstuffed or sententious.

A comfortable, pleasing character study, one with points to make about the ways the sexual revolution has failed men and women both.

So sweet in its devotion to blemished characters, so charming in developing their experimental dalliances...

Mrs. Fletcher feels both unfinished and rushed - the seven half-hour episodes failing to cement a story rather than just the feeling of a story, while too much short-hand and thus obviousness is used to bring other characters' stories to an end.
