The vicious and self-destructive Crowe family drive the plot of the fifth series of this FX crime drama. Small-time crook and full-time idiot Dewey Crowe (Damon Herriman) is ecstatic when he receives a large settlement for his ill treatment at the hands of the local law enforcement, but things quickly sour when his relative Darryl Crowe Jr. (Michael Rapaport) arrives from Florida and plots to use the spoils to build a criminal empire. When Darryl teams up with Boyd Crowder (Walton Goggins) to traffic heroin from Mexico, Raylan (Timothy Olyphant) is set on a collision course with the entire Crowe clan. Elsewhere, Ava (Joelle Carter) must learn to survive on her own in prison.

Justified may never get the trophies it deserves. Just keep doing what you're doing, Justified. That's reward enough.

Justified is slumming it: not nearly as sharp or rich as it has been or could be, but still much more clever and enjoyable than its procedural peers. It's begging to be graded on a curve, when it should be setting it.

Justified has reached the point where we know some of its tricks. But thanks to Leonard and Olyphant and writer Graham Yost's fine balance of humor and mayhem, it's still an hour worth looking forward to.

The show remains terrific; the production details, the writing, the quality just about peerless in just about every shot.

While I'm more than happy to look forward, "Restitution" also did a nice job of tying up season 5's troublesome plotlines in entertaining fashion.

Audience Reviews for Justified: Season 5

Super Reviewer

In its fifth season Justified tries some ambitious storytelling, but it ends up feeling a bit uneven and lacking in focus. Part of this is due to the fact that Marshal Raylan Givens takes a backseat for most of the season; reacting to the criminal plots rather than actively pursuing them. The main story follows Dewey Crowe's cousins, who come to Harlan and attempt to take over Boyd's criminal enterprise; meanwhile Boyd tries to free his fiancee Ava from prison by any means necessary. And, there are a number of additionally subplots that start and stop without having much effect on the overall story arc. However, the gritty and dark tone keeps the show compelling and intense. The guest casting is also pretty good and features Michael Rapaport, Alicia Witt, Amy Smart, and Danielle Panabaker; who all give impressive performances. While it's not very cohesive, Season 5 of Justified delivers some exciting thrills and sets up a climactic final season.
