Series 5 of the sitcom begins with Ted (Josh Radnor) starting his new job as an architecture professor at Columbia University. Meanwhile, notorious commitment-phobes Barney (Neil Patrick Harris) and Robin (Cobie Smulders) begin dating, although neither of them know what they want out of a relationship; and Marshall (Jason Segel) and Lily (Alyson Hannigan) wonder if they should have a baby. Last night's season finale of "How I Met Your Mother" was a nice, fairly low-key send-off to end the season.

Season five may not go down as one of the show's best seasons, but it still provided plenty of laughs and memorable moments, especially throughout the latter half.

It was a season of ups and downs, with a handful of fantastic standalone episodes sandwiched within so-so storylines (and one that didn't work at all).

The show's been in a groove in terms of performances, pace and pithiness-the three Ps of successful sitcoms-but it's been a little strained when it comes to the emotional underpinnings that make this more than just an agreeable half-hour of comedy.

As usual, the best bits came from the rightly celebrated Neil Patrick Harris.

The only standout episode here was "Girls Vs. Suits" which is a lot to say for a 22 episode season. This is where the quality of HIMYM really went down.
