High School Musical: The Musical: The Series is as charming and endearingly tongue-in-cheek as that title would suggest. It mostly exists in that sweet spot between pure empty nostalgia and something completely new.
The Series will leave fans impressed with its authentic feel, comedy, and quality. It is a production which seeks to redefine one of Disney's biggest franchises, and so far, it seems the series' cast and crew are together doing it right.
While there are some tongue-in-cheek gags, this restaging of the story of Gabriella and Troy, featuring the ear-splitting singing Disney musicals go in for, plays it straight. As saccharine as it gets.
This attempt to make a musical of High School Musical... plays with the fourth and fifth wall with a slew of references to the original, but little of the frolick and fun that made the franchise so endearing and enduring.
