The idea is to flesh these characters out so we care about the outcome more (we think), but the overall effect is that Hanna feels extremely baggy to a fault, as if it's merely killing time between action set pieces.
The rare intelligent action thriller that subverts storytelling tropes and surfs on its own ingenuity. In other scenes, that ingenuity gets lost in a mood board of decorative visuals that bloat its running time and hobble its pace.
At first it seems as though Hanna is going to suffer from that peculiar combination of blandness and gratuitous violence that afflicts so many transatlantic co-productions. But once Erik has busted the infant Hanna out of hospital..things get interesting.
The remake benefits from the larger, more elongated story, and the roomier pace in which to let it take form. David Farr smoothly blends new layers into this Hanna, and Creed-Miles and Kinnaman quickly make their roles their own.
