Hanna: Season 1 Reviews

April 3, 2019
Hanna has huge potential as an audience-draw. What it doesn't have yet is coherence and that may come because Amazon sees Hanna both as character and as commodity. That's very discernible.

If you stick with "Hanna," its energy and interest tick up in the last couple episodes, when the story definitively moves beyond that of the movie.

The idea is to flesh these characters out so we care about the outcome more (we think), but the overall effect is that Hanna feels extremely baggy to a fault, as if it's merely killing time between action set pieces.

The rare intelligent action thriller that subverts storytelling tropes and surfs on its own ingenuity. In other scenes, that ingenuity gets lost in a mood board of decorative visuals that bloat its running time and hobble its pace.

One of the more maddening examples in recent film adapting, and not just because it's so similar to its singular 2011 parent, Joe Wright's Hanna.

Creed-Miles is the best thing about the series; the actor shoulders nearly every scene, and manages to make the taciturn and seemingly affectless Hanna expressive and achingly relatable.

The remake benefits from the larger, more elongated story, and the roomier pace in which to let it take form. David Farr smoothly blends new layers into this Hanna, and Creed-Miles and Kinnaman quickly make their roles their own.

Hanna the television show so badly misunderstands what had been appealing about "Hanna" the film may have something to do with the creative mandates of peak TV-era genre fare.

A gritty and serious approach to a story that could be supremely ridiculous.

Nikita wasn't a bad series. It started decently and eventually forged an identity of its own. Perhaps the final five episodes of the first season of Hanna will do the same.

Despite its survivalist look and enchanted-forest fairytale overtones, Hanna is basically a spy show, so even that initial window adds a little extra "this message will self-destruct" spice.
