Tv Season Info

In a bid to rebrand the iconic Doctor, the BBC shakes off the kitschy sets of old and fashion a brand new start for the franchise. The ninth incarnation of the Doctor (Christopher Eccleston) and his new companion Rose (U.K. pop starlet Billie Piper) embark on yet more far-flung and improbable adventures: traveling 5,000,000,000 years into the future as the Earth is about to be swallowed by the sun, escaping from a mysterious space-station where the contestants are trapped in demented versions of popular reality-TV shows, and facing an old and terrible menace, the Daleks.

To my novice's eye, it's pretty decent hokum-fast, corny, genial, honest in its schlock.

The stories may seem a little silly (the first foes are mannequins that come to life) but it's fairly lively and fun.

It's a decidedly British sensibility that mixes some state-of-the-art effects with stuff that looks, well, decidedly cheesy. And it's an odd combination of action, adventure and wackiness - an odd combination that somehow works.

Some of the pop-culture humor and creatures owe a nod to Farscape, but the camp level is high and can be mighty funny.

Think big. Think bold. Think fantastic! For the very first time, Doctor Who achieves a perfect blend of big screen and small screen.

Eccleston is such an electrifying actor that he conveys the doctor's alien status (he is 900 years old with two hearts) by the means of wide-eyed, slightly unhinged over-enthusiasm.

Audience Reviews for Doctor Who: Season 1

A misstep here and some deus ex machina there can't slow this series down. Not a reboot, but a continuation of the series starting in 1963, although designed so you can jump right in here without having seen a previous episode. Well done!

A couple of missteps on the takeoff don't stop this from being one of the most important seasons of Doctor Who's 50+ year history, featuring my personal favourite Doctor yet.
