It may be that nostalgia caught up with me, but the level of shouting, verbal jousting and satirical soul searching got in the way of a good and significant story.

In the absence of good jokes, there is bug-eyed buffoonery. In the absence of effective satire, there are pious speeches. In the absence of art, there is sloganeering.

It's almost unimaginable that any adaptation of Joseph Heller's Catch-22 could be boring, but here we are.

For a series that gradually loses its sharpness in its commentary on power and masculinity in wartime, Abbott's performance constantly reminds you of what's so great about Heller's book.

Virtually all of the miniseries' attempts at comedy land with all the delicacy of one of Yossarian's aerial payloads... The humor stumbles when it should swing.

Without it, the antiwar and anti-authoritarian themes don't register with any real force. Apparently the Catch-22 of "Catch-22" is that to put it onscreen, you have to eviscerate it.

Scenes between actors are often funny and rich. And then the picture wanders off to find another human encounter, leaving dead air in its wake.

So much is missing or misconstrued in Hulu's Catch-22 that it's tempting to evaluate the show in terms of what it lacks rather than what it includes.
May 17, 2019
Where it strikes off on its own, whether in dialogue or wholly new scenes, it tends to get obvious and flat.

I don't yet know if this series will be able to fully deliver on the magnificence of Heller's brilliant anti-war manifesto, but if the first episode is any indication, it's got a fighting chance.

Hulu's adaptation of Joseph Heller's novel invites our laughter, contemplation, and shock in equal measure.

Catch-22 Season 1 Episode 1 makes the danger visceral while portraying a comedic edge through it all. Despite the oppressive and desperate tone of the episode, it still finds time to add humor to the situation.

Catch-22 is indisputably well-made, and above all a smart show, perhaps too smart for its own good - every shot feels considered, every head-spinning layer worth talking out to make sense of it.

Arriving in the midst of a new round of American saber-rattling, this time with Iran, the series acts as a much-needed counterpoint.
May 15, 2019
A fast-moving, well-written narrative that will quickly suck viewers into the frustratingly funny plight of Yossarian and his fellow airmen.

It's almost impossible to do a perfect TV version of [Joseph] Heller's prose, but this six-part miniseries admirably tries, delivering moments both haunting and funny.

[George Clooney] is fabulous as the knee-jerk commander.
May 17, 2019
The six-episode miniseries has been marketed mostly as a comedy, but... Make no mistake, friends, this is a war epic, and a searing, caustic commentary from the men inside it.

It's brilliantly performed by the entire sprawling cast, and the writing is tight enough that this sprawl never feels unmanageable or confusing.

Most of Catch-22 works even if it could have been a little more consistent in tone. At the very least, this series should renew interest in the novel which is one of the great books of the 20th Century.
