It's not appointment TV but the sort of show you might happily get to months, years, from now when you've done all the others you've missed.

Half anti-war paean, half mighty roar against gung-ho lying idiocy, it's as powerful as it was all those years ago. And genuinely, if pathetically, funny in its mightier moments.

Heller's satirical masterpiece has never had an adaptation to do it justice, but one episode in to Clooney's production, and things are shaping up nicely.

The absurd, circular logic of bureaucracy (and war) is made excruciatingly clear, and I was never bored or drifted.

Abbott is very, very watchable - he proves his leading man status as a charismatic thesp who can be entrusted to carry a weighty project.

The script conveys the book's black humour and comedy.

It's far more effective at capturing the surreal nihilism of the book, partly because it cheats by borrowing lots of themes from M*A*S*H.

Its sense of loss and creeping madness was deftly woven into a narrative that was often laugh-out-loud funny.

It's a remarkably good-looking, high-quality piece of work all round -- and it returns the story to its historical context.

It is very, very good. Its writers, Luke Davies and David Michôd, have done an incredibly smooth job given the way that, on the page, Heller makes the reader do so much of the work... But on some level, I cannot quite get fully involved with it.

Well-done adaptation of iconic war novel has sex, violence.

In a tale full of paradoxes, the style is both glossy and visceral, which feels exactly right.

It is what is happening off-screen - the United States' very real flirting with war on multiple fronts - that gives the show its heft.

Catch-22 is slightly disappointing, but when it wants to be it is very effective. [Full Review in Spanish]

I don't yet know if this series will be able to fully deliver on the magnificence of Heller's brilliant anti-war manifesto, but if the first episode is any indication, it's got a fighting chance.

It's almost impossible to do a perfect TV version of [Joseph] Heller's prose, but this six-part miniseries admirably tries, delivering moments both haunting and funny.

Most of Catch-22 works even if it could have been a little more consistent in tone. At the very least, this series should renew interest in the novel which is one of the great books of the 20th Century.

Good (and good-looking) production, but without contemporary relevance, urgency or edge.

It makes room for some small but soaring set pieces, like Giancarlo Giannini's brief appearance as an old, Italian man giving the young, American soldiers a lesson in wartime relativity.

There are good reasons to visit this project, but the big-name actors are, interestingly, not really among them. The lesser-known actors are, in many cases, stronger.
