This show feels very Masterpiece-like, with adaptation flop-sweat leaking off every scene. We watch it dutifully, because it's supposed to be important.

It is beautifully shot, thoughtfully written and incredibly well acted.

It looks great - the arid palette relived occasionally by the blue of the Italian coast as the men swim between raids - and the cast is top flight.

If there is a criticism to be made of the series generally it is that it is more comfortable in the humorous registers than in the sombre, where it sometimes relies too heavily on the score to do the work.

George Clooney's passion project shows a lot of promise, but as is the trouble with a lot of episode one's in limited series, the set-up takes a while, and so as a result it feels a lot more slow-paced than most are maybe anticipating.

[Christopher] Abbott's rueful performance lends Catch-22 its weight.

The show marks a return for [George] Clooney as a storyteller, playing into both sides of his directorial oeuvre and makes a strong case for Christopher Abbott as a new leading man.

[Christopher] Abbott's Yo-Yo is grounded and underplayed, in contrast to the blackly comic craziness around him, which pays off hugely when the character descends into genuine madness.

As with its source material novel, the tonal shifts between horror and hilarity are directed and played with relish.

It reminded me of a snow globe, where all of the action was on the inside, and I was on the outside. And when the flurries settled, everything still looked pretty much the same.

Although a terrifically well made production, with some gorgeous cinematography and a fabulous cast, it can't help but feel like a much more conventional work than the original book, with a lot that simply doesn't work as well on screen as on paper.

Watching Yo-Yo and his buddies slowly discover this crushing truth in a miniseries that often has the look and feel of more sentimental war pictures, well, that's where the true power of Hulu's "Catch-22" resides.
November 22, 2019
Catch-22 does have its uneven moments and some underdeveloped characters along the way but it succeeds in its overall mission.
November 22, 2019
Six hours may be an hour too many given the repetitive nature of the plot, but star Christopher Abbott makes for a likeable, relatable Yossarian.
November 22, 2019
The adaptation is often rote and merely serviceable.
November 22, 2019
Though "Catch-22" has its flaws - some roles feel underwritten, and there are probably too many scenes of the airmen enjoying the Italian waters - it gets stronger as it goes along.
November 22, 2019
The overall result is a production that's intriguing but ultimately as thin as it is handsome, and emotionally removed in a way that dilutes the larger impact.
November 22, 2019
It's uncommonly tricky material, much of its humor wrapped up in wordplay, many of its characters allegorical sketches. Hulu's Catch-22 tries to address the latter by bumping up the pathos, but that just makes the miniseries less enjoyable to watch.

Bringing this work to TV was a risky move, but the finished product is exceedingly well done and, at a time when government gobbledygook has trumped all previous notions of unbelievability, perhaps more urgent than anyone could have predicted.
November 22, 2019
It straddled that line between the beautiful and the horrible artfully, yet there was more to be sad about here than to laugh at.
