Critic Consensus: Arrow aspires to classic tragedy in a mournful episode that gives Black Canary a proper eulogy, although some viewers may find that the heartbreak was unearned.

Critic reviews for Canary Cry
I mean, if you had dry eyes... I'm pretty sure you don't have a soul. Once again, Blackthorne deserves all the awards.
Killing off the Black Canary was, for many of us, a mistake... And yet, in "Canary Cry" I couldn't help feeling moved by her passing and by Team Arrow's reaction to her death. Paul Blackthorne's performance was particularly powerful and heartbreaking.
I would think that even those who went into this hour with a cynical 'tude had to be moved, if not also impressed, by the weight of the material.
Watching Lance trying to cope with his daughter's death was incredibly heart-wrenching.
I guess you just wanted to move on from Laurel. In a way, that's understandable. Her character never worked.
