Critic reviews for Murder House

For the second week in a row, American Horror Story put to rest my fears that this show would simply aim to be weird for the sake of being weird. There are explanations being given, and major character developments taking place.

"Murder House" took a bit of a step backwards from the forward momentum we got in "Home Invasion," but it still offered up some wickedly puzzling frights and gave us all a new past atrocity to mull over.

It's rare that a show rewards a second look, but American Horror Story is a program that merits repeated viewings.

This episode was so much setup and backstory that we didn't really get any decent scares or jaw dropping gimp-suit-sex moments, so in the ratings system I just invented five seconds ago, I'm only going to give it 2/5 potential Jarred Baby Heads.

When it comes to stories about relationships ruined by horndog infidelity, the blonde bombshell wrapped in red is usually the other woman, not the woman destroyed. But American Horror Story is not a show to indulge conventional thinking.

By virtually any rubric you want to apply to it, it is a terrible, messed-up television show. And yet by doing virtually everything horribly, it becomes preposterously entertaining.
