Abby's: Season 1 Reviews

Abby's pilot is not very good. And it would be great if that didn't matter quite so much.

[It] wants to be the life of the backyard bar party, but really ends up like an overpriced water downed drink.
March 26, 2019
The problem is, there's not much humor beyond that wrung from dehydrated, microwaved writing by the solid supporting cast.

If "Abby's" is judged purely by modern standards, it may not live long enough to make the necessary adjustments.

They're delivering punchlines, but the characters themselves have not evolved beyond their pilot characterizations.

Look for Abby's to have a short run while its featured booze hounds need not worry about being cut off.

Maybe, when rewatching the series in a few years, these episodes will just feel like ordinary chapters of the short-lived saga.

There's a need for more channels to fill the void with diverse takes on the kinds of series that have historically stood the test of time. "Abby's" is a good start.

Abby's is pretty funny, and Morales owns the role of the prickly, commanding, loyal, lovable former Marine.

Early wobbliness aside, Abby's is not a show to dismiss. There is so much potential in its creators and cast... Hopefully Abby's will figure out soon how to make itself more at home.

Morales is the perfect choice to play Abby.

Kind of like the titular bar itself, Abby's kind of sneaks up on you with its charm and relatively laid back attitude for a typically more frantic style of sitcom.
March 29, 2019
While it doesn't have everyone around the bar figured out, the sight of Morales so at home on a show with her name in the title is worth raising a glass to.

The jokes feel less important than the chance to spend time each week in the company of some appealing goofballs. Fortunately, it's a likable enough group -- Morales and Flynn in particular -- to compensate for the mild humor.

Congenial sitcom set in the great outdoors where everything -- even or especially a sitcom -- seems just a little bit better.

Throwback comedy has great jokes, a timeworn premise.

because there's promise in the group of characters that inhabit Abby's bar, and that Morales is a fine sitcom lead. But just realize it might take a while for Abby's to achieve its potential.
March 28, 2019
It is a solidly constructed sitcom of the family-by-association sort that does the nation the incidental favor of keeping Natalie Morales and Neil Flynn in public view.

There's a lot of room for tinkering on Abby's and a lot of elements that could eventually turn the show into a winner. Based on the early returns, it's going to take some patience. Or maybe just a few beers.
