A Discovery of Witches is actually really good at setting up things not only for the first season but for the series itself. We meet most of our main characters during the first episode and it sets up the drama for the season.
Palmer maintained an admirable balance of defiant competence and bewilderment at her situation. The discovery of the show's title will be in part, of course, Diana's own - of her past, the past of her people, her powers and her future.
It has its own parlance, its stunning vistas of rural French hills and yachts covered in polished teak, and its central story of forbidden love, defined by a dynamic that I can only describe as "sexy-sexy sex."
It gets off to a solid start, and the promise of time-travel in the subsequent books is intriguing for the upcoming Seasons 2 and 3. Given its many charms, it just may be the next show to cast its spell over viewers.
