It has its own parlance, its stunning vistas of rural French hills and yachts covered in polished teak, and its central story of forbidden love, defined by a dynamic that I can only describe as "sexy-sexy sex."

Those of you who aren't nimble enough to find all of the good stuff on streaming services outside Netflix and Hulu can feast your eyes on the fiery relationship between a witch and vampire.

It's the little moments when A Discovery of Witches relaxes its self-seriousness - to indulge a joke, or enthusiastically juice its pulpy story - that really get the blood pumping.

The show holds some promise of fun escapism though... Goode steals the show with an excellent final act where his ability to both charm and terrify is in full force.

From its bold writing and lush cinematography to its production value, A Discovery of Witches is a solid installment in the gothic horror genre.

It gets off to a solid start, and the promise of time-travel in the subsequent books is intriguing for the upcoming Seasons 2 and 3. Given its many charms, it just may be the next show to cast its spell over viewers.

What A Discovery of Witches Season 1 lacks in originality, is bolstered by strong performances from Goode and Palmer.

With stellar production values and first-rate performances, A Discovery of Witches is the rare show that nails just about every aspect of a compelling first season.

It's a show that can satisfy audiences looking for both Peak TV prestige and a good old fashioned scarefest, and there's not many shows that can pull that off.

A Discovery of Witches is actually really good at setting up things not only for the first season but for the series itself. We meet most of our main characters during the first episode and it sets up the drama for the season.

In the end, A Discovery of Witches is a mostly worthwhile addition to the seemingly endless parade of genre book adaptations that make for an entertaining, if not entirely satisfying binge-watch.

There's no shortage of gorgeous locations, swoon-worthy actors, danger or mystery on board.

A Discovery Of Witches most often calls to mind a smarter, gentler Underworld.

A Discovery of Witches is obviously not looking to give us the groundbreaking. It's aiming for highly watchable, and I do feel the pull to watch the next episode.

A Discovery of Witches potently mixes sensuality and the supernatural, adding a pedigree of scholarly wisdom from the hallowed halls of Oxford University.

It becomes much more Matthew Goode's series and, if we're being perfectly honest, it's probably the better for it and surely the more satisfying to its target audience.
January 16, 2019
The series lays out its world and characters briskly and intelligibly, and the early episodes invest the fantasy clichés with some elegance and picturesqueness.
January 15, 2019
If anything can hold the series together, it will be the growing relationship between our central warring witch and vampire.

[I]t has a winning stateliness matched by the actors' underplaying.
