Director Peter Berg engages in Michael Bay fetishism the way one might say Ed Gein engaged in female festishism.

The Dictator (2012)
The Dictator feels almost exactly like a Saturday Night Live movie from the 90s.

Marvel's The Avengers (2012)
The Avengers proves these guys truly are Earth's Mightiest Heroes.

You may find yourself a dedicated follower of Maggie in the end. I know I am.

The Three Stooges (2012)
If you're a Stooges fan, go see the movie. If you like crude, silly slapstick, go see the movie. If you have a stick up your ass, go see Titanic.

American Reunion (2012)
I would accuse American Reunion of being misogynistic, but the movie seems to hold all of humanity in contempt, not just women.

The Hunger Games (2012)
The Hunger Games is largely a triumph of smart, brave, timely, heady science fiction that recalls the 60s and 70s era of big idea scifi.

21 Jump Street (2012)
It would have been impressive if the 21 Jump Street movie was any good. The fact that it's flat-out great feels like showboating by directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller.

Act of Valor (2012)
a meaningful tribute to soldiers and their sacrifices that also doubles as a genuinely entertaining adventure.

The Cabin in the Woods (2012)
You'll feel like horror is revitalized, like its importance is more obvious than ever. That might be Cabin's greatest achievement, reminding us why we love and need this genre.

John Carter (2012)
Often spectacular, with stunning action and thrilling moments, it's a film that captures the pulpy, swashbuckling sensibilities of Burroughs while updating much of the whiz bang for an audience a century older than the original novels.
Posted Mar 1, 2012
This is a movie of shattering ineptitude, starting at the script and reaching into every aspect of the cheap, rushed, sh***y-looking production.

Safe House (2012)
Safe House will have you on the edge of your seat - so you can spring out of it the second the credits roll.
Posted Feb 9, 2012
A strong, well-told science fiction movie that uses its fantastical ideas to explore grounded human emotions. It's got vivid action and it has cool concepts, but most of it all it has great characters.

Rundskop (Bullhead) (2012)
Fascinating and beautiful and brutal

The Grey (2012)
If we had one like this a month - lean, smart, muscular, thematically coherent and filled with good character actors - the cinema would be in remarkably good shape.

The ultimate poseur movie... [A cinematic] temporary tattoo, a way of feeling underground without ever committing to anything real.

War Horse (2011)
There are sequences of such breathtaking skill and confidence that I believe the film must be seen by everyone who ever hopes to make, or even talk intelligently, about movies.

Watching the legendarily cool Jack Nicholson literally CRYING about Roger Corman will put a lump in the throat of even the most jaded viewer.
Posted Dec 22, 2011
A legitimately great action film, a thrilling and fun bit of exquisitely crafted escapism. It might be the best in the series, and it's without a doubt the best since the first film.
Posted Dec 14, 2011
the touches that made the first film a surprise seem to have disappeared. The Holmes/Watson relationship is now shrill, the facade of a mystery story has been chucked for a nation-hopping action adventure, and the volume has been turned up to 12.

The Artist (2011)
If The Artist truly were from the period it's about, it would be a minor film that occasionally played on TCM at 3AM, and about which even hardcore silent film fans wouldn't care much.

We Bought a Zoo (2011)
We Bought A Zoo is targeted at people who cry during TV commercials, who get misty eyed in the greeting card aisle.

A deeply felt, hugely personal, glorious and heart-swelling ode to the magic of cinema and stories: the way they bring us together, allow us to understand each other, allow us to see our dreams come true.

The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 1 might be the most beautiful and well made bad film in history.

Paranormal Activity 3 (2011)
PARANORMAL ACTIVITY 3 feels the most like a real film, even though it sticks to the exhausted found footage format of the first two.

Depraved and disgusting but intellectually active, The Human Centipede 2 never fully coheres as a movie but works incredibly as a screed of cultural critique.

The Ides of March (2011)
Smart and as exciting as a thriller, with killer performances. Ryan Gosling is magnificent.

Take Shelter (2011)
Playing like the excruciatingly long first act of a better movie, Take Shelter long overstays its welcome while confusing narrative indolence for tension.

The technology and performances that bring the apes to life make the film a must-see for any modern movie fan, but it's the emotion and humanity of Caesar's story that makes the film a must-see for any movie fan at all.

William Carlos Williams wrote "The pure products of America/ Go crazy," and the funny, freaky Tabloid captures that contrast, that promise, that curse.

Red State (2011)
The film alternates between being heavy handed and moronic, and it seems to be informed by a 15 year olds' understanding of Waco filtered through the paranoid ramblings of a stoner.

Winnie the Pooh (2011)
In an age when the Shrek films make oral sex jokes and Cars 2 flip-flops between tedium and terror, the real pleasure of the gentle, graceful Winnie the Pooh is that it is a kid's film that really, truly works for kids.

Horrible Bosses (2011)
Considering how many other summer comedies deserve to be fired for cause and walked out of the building by security with their stuff in a filing box, Horrible Bosses does the job well enough.

I wouldn't have minded seeing a little Bay-hem on the big screen in Transformers 3; instead, with battles I didn't care about between characters I barely knew, all I got was idiocy, tedium and expense in the pursuit of Bay-nality.

Transformers 3 is the Michele Bachmann of cinema. Despite all of its staggering flaws it will have its supporters, and its success is part of a trend of accepting less and pretending it's more.
