Haynes spares us slack-jawed, bug-eyed Spielbergian reactions shots, but he also denies us deep emotional engagement.

While it is certainly ambitious, and undeniably beautiful, its style often feels divorced from its narrative, losing itself stargazing when the story required something more personal.

Minor Haynes is still an interesting curio, particularly given the stylistic acumen on display, but it's easily his least effective film thus far.

Wonderstruck's diligence in dropping breadcrumbs becomes a hundred-pound weight dragging behind the plot, preventing the film from sweeping you away into a world of curiosity and awe, despite the film being ostensibly about precisely that.

Coming from a filmmaker capable of wowing with his visual flair, Wonderstruck fails to illicit much wonder .... This one could have been a heck of a lot better.

Wonderstruck isn't as magical as it seeks to be and it is certainly no Never Ending Story.

The result - other than the sights and sounds, or lack thereof - is rather ordinary, leaving us feeling a few explosions and superheroes might actually have been welcome.

Personally, the film does not covince me, especially after that blow called Carol. [Full Review in Spanish]

What is it about Brian Selznick's ornate illustrated fictions that leads good directors to make their worst films?

The meticulousness of Todd Haynes's execution overburdens his work's conceptually exhilarating sense of wonder.

Unfortunately, its awkward structure keeps the viewer from being wonderstruck for a good 90 minutes.
