Thankfully, "What She Said" is balanced on the subject of Kael's clout in the film and magazine industries, which could be as bruising as it was influential.
"What She Said" pays fitting homage, not just to a great writer but to a vanished age.
Not only explores the special talent of Kael and what made her famous, but is also a snapshot of a volatile and exciting era of film history...
If Kael were still alive, she might well have wanted "What She Said" to cock a more critical eye toward her. She says right in the doc that it's dangerous for a critic to be too popular.
While Garver's documentary isn't worthy of its subject's fascinating artistic legacy, I anxiously await the one that is.
