I didn't find it creepy -- maybe I'm just creepy!

The film pretends to boldly mine the inner life of a complex central character, but only ever produces two alternating emotional expressions: "I'm scared!" and "Phwoarr!"

It is as odd as its own central character.

The female characters in Welcome to Marwen are all a little too yielding, a little too understanding... They expect so little of Hogancamp that it's all too easy for him to impress them, and all too easy for us to feel good about ourselves in the process.

It's hard to convey the oppressive ickiness of a biopic with such good intentions...

A well-meaning, heartfelt, and vigorously engaged tribute to a remarkable person...

For a film by a populist director aimed at - presumably - a large audience, Robert Zemeckis's Welcome to Marwen has a ton of courage.

Welcome to Marwen is the ultimate Robert Zemeckis movie. This is not intended as a compliment.

I left Welcome to Marwen feeling that Hogancamp had been cut off from agency from his own story, reduced to a cow-eyed dunderhead Candide only more voyeuristic.

But in a complex story of redemption and resilience with the blurring of real life and fantasy, it's one item on a list that contains a lot of other unchecked boxes.

[It] is such an eccentric film that it wins a few points for sheer ambition, including its inventive visual scheme. The central story, however... never feels as transcendent or stirring as director/co-writer Robert Zemeckis clearly intends it to be

Gooey dreck that attempts to be a quirky comedy, an earnest drama and a warm-hearted fantasy about the Nazis - and fails mightily at all the above.
December 20, 2018
One of the many graceful touches in Welcome to Marwen is the total lack of pity or condescension in either world.

You may be repelled, in the moment, by its oil-and-water mix of tortured sentimentality and creepy puppet play. You might also find it damnably hard to shake.

Like many true tales before it, the film simply falls victim to corporate Hollywood's insistence that there is only one way to tell a story about trauma.
December 20, 2018
This true story from director Zemeckis, about a hate-crime victim trying to heal himself through puppet art, isn't hack work; there are ideas buried beneath its high-gloss surface and relentless uplift. But good luck trying to dig them out.

Mind-numbingly immense, joylessly violent and utterly lifeless... You've got to see it to believe it, though I wouldn't advise doing so.
December 20, 2018
Remarkably ham-fisted and tone deaf throughout.

December 20, 2018
This is a complex man and artist worthy of a complex story, not a would-be-feel-good farce.
December 20, 2018
Carell fully taps into the needy outsider that has informed more than a few of his roles. A viewer's tolerance for such a sad sack might vary, but he's believably touching as a yearning and damaged soul.

The director takes a fascinating true story of recovery through creative expression and drags it across a sticky-saccharine stretch of the uncanny valley.

An inventive use of cinematic effects and animation to bring a true story to life.

There is not much in this movie that feels authentic or fully realized, but its very strangeness makes it hard to forget or dismiss.
December 19, 2018
Despite a sympathetic lead performance from Steve Carell, the fictionalized version bogs down in extensive animated doll sequences, so similar they grow increasingly tiresome.

"Welcome to Marwen" does not work as a drama of addiction, and frankly it doesn't work as a celebration of Hogancamp's creations, which work best as stunning still-photo images.

Though lacking in subtlety, Robert Zemeckis' "Welcome to Marwen" delivers a sentimental fantasy world worth wading in.

Welcome to Marwen is a totally confounding movie.

The remarkable career of artist and photographer Mark Hogancamp has been turned into an elaborate and misjudged movie of baffling pass-agg ickiness and pointlessness.

Marwen is the work of a filmmaker who's never been more sure of his craft, and never less connected to anything resembling actual human experience.
December 19, 2018
The messaging here is dangerous at best, as the more complex truths of Mark's trauma are steamrolled by Zemeckis' reckless desire to turn the guy's mind into a theme park ride.

The result is a self-defeating, yikes-a-minute hodge-podge, and a film it's impossible to get a grip on from one scene to the next.

A sometimes jarring but ultimately effective extended metaphor for healing...

December 19, 2018
The real-life scenes don't feel like Hogancamp's real life; they feel like a Hollywood falsification of it, despite Carell's and Mann's valiant efforts.

Most of the heartwarming power of Mark's stranger-than-fiction story is AWOL in its Tinseltown makeover.

December 19, 2018
Some parts of "Marwen" just seem empty, and while the filmmakers and Carell earn praise for tackling trauma through animation, the film ultimately has no real impact.
December 19, 2018
The film is far from incompetent, and it brims with ambition, but too much of the time what's happening just sits there.
December 19, 2018
The story's knotty aspects reverberate under its sentimental-cum-inspirational surface. In the guise of a glossy entertainment, Welcome to Marwen gets at some unnervingly irresolvable truths about humanity.
