Maybe we should start celebrating how close we came to fulfilling our dreams more often - that might encourage us to not give up and find a way to realise them eventually.

Brie Larson's directorial debut offers a quieter, but potent, kind of girl power.

Unicorn Store has a lot of magic, charm and heart, and although at times it becomes a little too fantastical, the character at its core and the journey she goes through provides an entertaining and investing watch.

It may seem that McIntyre's screenplay may be a little heavy handed when signalling the male stereotypes but Larson's performance never makes Kit into somebody unrealistically naïve as she manages to maintain a hopeful outlook on life.

Unicorn Store is about unleashing the weirdness of Larson and Jackson and assuring young people, like they didn't already know, that it's OK to be who you are. Yet ultimately, for a sweet film about dreamers and unicorns, it's curiously black-and-white.

More movies like this, please: a piquant mix of whimsy and snark; an insistence that it's not crazy to forge your own oddball path; an embrace of girly uncool. Bring on the weird, difficult women.

[Brie Larson's] film is naive, of course, but at the same time ambitious. [Full review in Spanish]

What Unicorn Store teaches us is to vacuum up our insecurities and be our truest selves. And while we may not fit into the box society puts us in as a result, it's okay to see life through sparkly, bubblegum-pink glasses.

Taking on a potentially twee and childish premise, [Brie] Larson has created a bold and colourful world for [Samantha] McIntyre's earnest, soulful and relatable tale of personal growth.
