The tone is generally celebratory and, given Morrison's extraordinary impact on American letters, deservedly so.

Though the documentary is conventionally structured, it still stands tall as a valuable record of the life and times and work of an American treasure.

If the film is both linear... and plainly adoring, it also gives you ample reason for that adoration. You certainly end up admiring Toni Morrison, but also aching to know a bit more about her.

As with Morrison's books, The Pieces I Am invites multiple, maybe even piecemeal, encores, because few writers wield the capacity to leave their readers with an evolving parting message with each subsequent reread.

While the format as such doesn't allow for a critical push-and-pull, that's not a debit. This is about time well spent on a life well lived. A series of pieces adding up to much more than the whole.

It reminds us how long she had to wait for the recognition she so richly deserved, and what a distinctive, generous, funny, astute, self-doubting, unstoppable and formidable figure she was along the way.

A fitting tribute, breaking up heady discussion of Morrison's major works with jazzy digressions about her family's Great Migration journey from the South to her cherished multiethnic suburb of Lorain, Ohio.

"The Pieces I Am" offers something else, as a dividend yielded by her achievements and her years on the earth: the profound pleasure of her company.

This moving and profound portrait serves as a fitting biographical tribute as well as a piercing, often painful recount of African American history from slavery and the Civil War to the Jim Crow era, the Civil Rights movement and beyond.

Also, while the documentary takes its time before getting to the biographical material, it covers enough ground by the closing credits that even people who know nothing about Morrison going in should be able to pass a simple pop quiz after.

A portrait of a writer who has always dared to reflect the world as she sees it: as ugly as it is beautiful, where black characters have the agency to be as bold, hurtful, and triumphant as everyone else.

Enlivened both by its own storytelling dexterity and by the participation of its subject, who at 87 years old remains as warm, vibrant and insightful as ever.

An informative, if unadventurous appreciation of a great writer.
