Although it had promise in the first few scenes, The Wretched is crushed under the weight of a myriad of horror-film clichés sprinkled throughout.

The film will make your skin shiver and blood curdle, but it stumbles over its own feet at every hurdle presented.

The script is littered with one pop cultural nod after the other and feels like the poor man's Stephen King. There are deer skulls, and witches' logs that must have been left over props from "The Blair Witch Project."

A highly derivative narrative seems even more deadened thanks to their switch to a teenage boy's perspective, but some impressive visuals are sometimes enough to distract from the predictable proceedings.

The Wretched is an easy watch and for the most part well-paced to keep a focused attention, but ultimately the multiple relationship conflicts within Ben's story are a huge distraction...

The film's creature design is incredible, and the weighty old school score is worthy of a more impressive film, but ultimately the whole assembly is a bit of a belly flop.

Horror fans will find a great deal of the movie frustratingly familiar.

It's hard to say anything in The Wretched is outright terrible, but it is underwhelming and squanders worthwhile creature design

More successful as a calling card for a mainstream horror directing assignment than as an original creation.

Never more than a horror thriller you don't mind, rather than one worth tracking down.

The filmmakers don't examine the psychological terror, the bitterness, and lust that gave rise to many of the works they cherish.

"The Wretched" feels like a melding of two films: one I've seen ad infinitum, and another that begs empathy and intrigue.

The Wretched doesn't work as either comfort food or gross-out entertainment.

frustratingly flawed, the brothers haphazard in establishing both their characters and spatial integrity... any good will is wasted in an overblown climax full of stupid decisions, unlikely coincidences and muddled mythology.

writers-directors Brett Pierce and Drew T. Pierce concoct a monster movie that could have satisfied my higher expectations. Unfortunately, the story is muddled and some of the characters confusing.

An accessible teen horror flick feeling for the right path but passing up opps to nail the genre.

I've seen deer-gutting videos that made more sense.

Sadly, The Wretched has very little on its mind beyond serving up a few nifty special effects in service of a plot stitched together from various slasher movies of yesteryear.

The Wretched never finds a convincing through line beyond its basic plot, and the plot is a fundamentally basic one, at that.
