A chilling, by-the-numbers, summer-vacation supernatural horror pic.

Familiar but fresh, this brisk, gory mashup of horror and teen adventure movie is inspired by many 1970s and '80s favorites, but it's less a slavish copy than it is an enthusiastic, adoring tribute.

For the most part, this is a comfortably ordinary horror with some neat scares but, in its conclusion, it finds impressive darkness that makes it a particularly interesting genre treat.

There's a good balance of firmness and entertaining. Creepy thrills and atmospheric chills, for a pretty modest horror film I thought it did the job pretty well.

There's something appealing about its modest ambitions, with its cast of unknowns, relative low stakes and retro jump scares.

All in all, The Wretched is a mostly effective thriller whose biggest sin is how frustratingly close it comes to clearing the bar.

A fun throwback to 80s horror films with plenty of thrills and chills reminiscent of Fright Night.

The Wretched might not give enough focus to its unique and refreshing entity, but thanks to a tension-filled atmosphere and some terrifying visuals this remains a damn fun ride from start to finish.

It makes for a pleasantly spooky late-night hang out with a buddy or loved one who doesn't mind some arm grabbing throughout.

Its best scares tend to involve a glance into the darkness, where nothing should be but in which evil lurks, or through binoculars, which throws the malevolent presence lingering at The Wretched's edges into sharp relief.

The strong screenplay is rich in character development. The audience is following Ben, the fellow holding their flashlight, and because he's relatable, the movie is given an extra layer of believability. "Peter" isn't crying wolf here.

Successfully drawing on both ancient evils and modern teen angst, The Wretched is a neat, entertaining horror whose makers clearly know how to utilise genre tropes to their best advantage.

A sharp tale about all kinds of things, particularly about the loss of family and the search for community. It's an interesting, scary little movie.

The Wretched's endeavor to meld a junior mystery with some pretty extreme horror works more than it doesn't, but ultimately neither side of this narrative coin gets explored as much as it should.

"The Wretched" doesn't reinvent the rules, but it has a timeliness to it that's hard to shake.

If this really was some lost relic of the VHS era, it'd pass the blind rental test: There is a witch, and she's as creepy as the box art would surely promise.

Despite a misstep here and there, this is one of the more entertainingly straightforward horror pictures in a while.

It also has a superbly designed titular creature, one that is well worth the wait before we finally end up seeing it in all its disgustingly abhorrent glory.

It weaves this strange and solemn narrative among lovely cinematography and A+ gore. Enjoy ... if you dare.
