Critic Reviews for The Tobacconist (Der trafikant)
While "The Tobacconist" is always watchable, its inability to find meaning in a mess of uncooked symbolism prevents the movie from being worthy of Freud, and from doing justice to his parting words.
The script, based on a revered novel from Robert Seethaler, concerns more serious themes than Freud's off-hand advice, though its shallow storytelling gives little to contemplate.
A relatively accessible if grossly oversimplified portrayal of a horrific period, brightened by the chemistry between Ganz and lead actor Simon Morzé.
Much of director and co-writer Nikolaus Leytner's drama, which alternates between starchy and hyperventilating, generates eye rolls.... "The Tobacconist" should have been richer and provided something for viewers to think about and chew on.
Despite taking place during one of the most traumatic periods of modern civilization, the movie itself feels like little more than an amusing trifle, a chance to play dress up with some of history's most famous figures.
