Critic Consensus: Bursting with visual style but suffering from a dearth of discernible narrative, The Strange Color of Your Body's Tears is recommended only for giallo enthusiasts.

Movie Info

THE STRANGE COLOR OF YOUR BODY'S TEARS (Thriller) From directing duo Hélène Cattet & Bruno Forzani (AMER), comes this homage to the masters of classic Italian Giallo horror. Dan returns home to find his wife is missing. With no signs of struggle or break-in and with no help from the police, Dan's search for answers leads him down a psychosexual rabbit hole. THE STRANGE COLOR OF YOUR BODY'S TEARS is a bloody and taut fantasia of suspense that leaves the viewer entranced in this highly original erotic thriller. (C) Strand Releasing

While rich with image, the film's plot seems to be chasing its own tail and the result is more boring than tense.

As tiresome as the relentless, indulgent inscrutability and lack of story momentum can be, it says something for the movie's visceral power that there isn't an urge to quit on it.

I found a few lines and images in the second half intellectually stimulating, but it wasn't enough. "Strange Color" exploited little but my patience.

It's a confrontational fever dream film told from constantly shifting perspectives, and a chilly, dizzying trip into a genre defined by violently conflicting emotions.

Enervatingly synthetic, "The Strange Color of Your Body's Tears" slices and dices the images and tropes of Italian giallo-style slasher films into an inert pile of style.

Audience Reviews for The Strange Color of Your Body's Tears

A nightmarish, LSD-induced exercise of style clearly inspired by the Italian giallo, technically impeccable and gorgeous, although it offers little in terms of narrative (or anything else to keep us interested for too long) and is sexist to suggest that women corrupt men, driving them mad with desire and fatal obsession.

I was really looking forward to the followup film from the team that made Amer, and while this film is just as much of a visual treat, I felt it difficult to get through. What made Amer work so well in this style is how they kept the story very simple, being virtually comprised of three segments that made it easy to follow the inner life of the character, and sympathize with her struggle. The Strange Color seemed to get too caught up in weaving a more convoluted mystery, and this coupled with the dizzying pace and intense imagery made it feel more like a tedious exercise for the eyeballs.

As visually stunning as it is mind boggling, "The Strange Colour of Your Body's Tears" is an extremely unique ride that will require patience, tolerance for its gritty content and may require re-watching.
