In spite of the hidden quality flashes among their boring 101 minutes, it is the routine that ends up ruining the film.[Full Review in Spanish]

Colin Firth and Rachel Weisz very nearly drag this one over the finish line.

Matters become more engrossing in the film's second half as Crowhurst tries to keep body, soul and mind together, but by this point it will be a rare viewer who has not succumbed to exhaustion.

Despite solid performances from Firth and Rachel Weisz I found it hard to actually care about the characters and become invested in their story.

An intriguing story whose execution, unfortunately, sank for not daring to explore its psychological aspects in more depth. [Full Review in Spanish]

There is no emotion in seeing Colin Firth aboard a fake ship in a fake ocean, or in the zenith shots of toy boats floating in pools. [Full review in Spanish]

Firth has always been adept at revealing shards of psychic trauma beneath a calm English defence; he has ample opportunity here as the gap between reality and fantasy stretches beyond breaking point.

This is apointless adventure, as well as the same film focused on this pathetic adventure. (Complete review in Spanish, in the Mexican newspaper Reforma)

A disjointed film that feels as if it decided to changed tack somewhere along the way.

Like the unfortunate yachtsman, James Marsh's film gets stuck in the doldrums after a solid start, and wanders aimlessly though not unpleasantly towards its sombre conclusion.

The Mercy is a limited pleasure, unfortunately, given the cast, the subject, and the director. It's trying to be three different films in three different genres, all of them attempting to follow the same narrative at the same time.

It defies comprehension that a director as accomplished as James Marsh... was involved in this woefully misconceived (and suspiciously long-delayed) period drama.

The film has been made with plenty of sincerity and no small amount of effort, but with no idea of what it wants to say.

Firth is good as ever, but the sense is of a selfish, foolish man who'd sooner drown than admit defeat.

True-life sailing misadventure is mild in every way.

Uninspired biopic sheds little light on unfathomable maritime mystery.

Watching Crowhurst slowly crack is the cinema equivalent of filling your pockets with pebbles and chucking yourself into the Solent.

Though there's certainly an intriguing story buried in here somewhere, the film abandons it in its efforts to valorise Crowhurst and his foolhardy dream while demonising the press for doing its job.

How they got the Donald Crowhurst story wrong is its own minor tragedy.
