As far as giant monster movies go, this one packs a great deal of bite... even without a whole lot of actual biting.

It is not a majorly intelligent film, it's more popcorn and leave-your-brain-at-the-door type of entertainment, but it moves at a fast pace, has plenty in there for everyone, knows its audience, and goes for broke at times with the stunts and the humor...

Director Jon Turteltaub (National Treasure) strikes an agreeable tone, avoiding both unnecessary heaviness and self-aware camp.

Taken purely for what it is, there's plenty to enjoy about The Meg.

Director Jon Turteltaub reels you in with Bloody action and adventure for the first two thirds of this movie, but, after that, it gets pretty silly and sappy, including a romance, but not with the toothy Mega fish.

There is nothing particularly exceptional about the film, but it is often tremendously fun.

Statham enjoys himself enormously, and always seems to be in on the joke.

It's summer. It's hot. That means that while your head may be saying "challenging intellectual drama" your heart is screaming "Jason Statham versus a King Kong-sized shark."

The Stath vs a huge prehistoric monster shark: one's the toughest creature in the ocean, and the other's a shark.
March 21, 2019
There's some corniness that's apart of this film, there are some cheesy lines, but Statham sells it all.

Exactly as ridiculously over the top as you want it to be. There's nothing meaningful swimming around in these waters, but there just might be something entertaining.

Man, I can't wait to see this one again on a lazy weekend.

There's still something undeniably retro about it - at the end of the day, no one really matters except Statham, the shark and his poison-tipped harpoon gun.

The Meg will have you falling off your chairs laughing nearly as many times as its on-screen characters fall into the sea.

The Meg knows exactly what it is, and more importantly, what it isn't.
