The film is messy, with an occasionally strained script and meandering sequences.

It has a scrappy, indie feel that I like...not for everyone...but an honest and compassionate account, the pain and the ecstasy of the creative process...

This is the sum total of several decades worth of work from a man who was once one of the most exciting and enjoyable voices in comedy and cinema, but it has none of his energy and vigour.
February 4, 2020
It's cleverly structured and very nicely acted but also a little dated, convoluted and overlong.

Terry Gilliam's long-plagued dream project finally hits the big screen after a 25-year wait, but his ambitious tale feels like it's passed its sell by date.

The Man Who... is fun for an hour, then messy, baffling and finally infuriating, but kudos to Gilliam for getting there eventually.

It'd be easy to map Gilliam on to Grisoni, a film-maker dogged by his artistic misfires and the mess left in their wake. Really, though, he's Quixote, stuck in a noble past and wilfully disconnected from a present that jostles uncomfortably close.

A staggering misfire that's both unambitious and bloated.

Personally, for all its frustrating elements it is worthy viewing of anyone who consider themselves filmgoers.

The end result is fun and frustrating in almost equal measure.

It's a messy, unfocused film that seems so in awe of its own existence that it can't quite summon the energy to tell a worthwhile story.

The Man Who Killed Don Quixote is clever, witty and funny and visually spectacular at times.

Neither a splendid phoenix from the ashes nor a complete failure, The Man Who Killed Don Quixote is erratic, occasionally inspired, occasionally dull, but shot through with a grandiose sense of ambition.

Gilliam didn't need to make The Man Who Killed Don Quixote. He is The Man Who Killed Don Quixote.

It certainly won't be everyone's jug of sangria. But I swigged it whole, mostly with pleasure.

The melancholy is the saving grace, one man out of time immortalising another. Gilliam refrains from explicit meta, but winks over the fourth wall.

The plot is wacky and meandering, but [Terry] Gilliam infuses it with a gleefully freewheeling tone, taking flights of fancy at every turn.

It's fitfully entertaining. I will say that Jonathan Pryce is perfect in [this] role.

[The movie] plays like a great artist's last rage against the dying of the light: a holy fool's last epic about holy fools. ... It moves me.

Its excessive nature often plays a trick on it, and the last act is an absolute failure. [Full Review in Spanish]
