The Love Punch (2014)

Critic Consensus: In spite of a pair of extremely talented leads and a premise that should lend itself to entertaining action and comedy, The Love Punch manages to waste it all on a bungled attempt at classic caper cinema.

Movie Info

Spanning locations in Paris, London and the French Riviera THE LOVE PUNCH brings together Pierce Brosnan (Mama Mia) and Academy-Award winner Emma Thompson (Saving Mr Banks) for the first time, as ex-husband and wife Richard and Kate whose biting banter suggests that the flames of their former relationship have not been fully extinguished... Unfortunately the same cannot be said for their retirement nest egg which is wiped out when Richard's investment firm is defrauded and the pension fund is siphoned away. Learning that the unscrupulous French financier behind the scheme has just purchased a $10million diamond for his bride to be, the divorced duo grudgingly agree to set aside their differences, and hatch a plot to gate-crash the wedding and steal the rock. Roped in to assist in the heist are the couple's former neighbours Timothy Spall (The King's Speech) and Celia Imrie (The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel) who are also rooting for their reconciliation. The foursome form an unlikely band of lawbreakers in this classic comedy caper set against the sun drenched backdrop of the Cote d'Azur. (C) Official Site

This "Punch" never truly connects.

Thompson is one of those rarities who shines in just about anything. Her crack timing enlivens even her worst lines.

Alas, there are no sparks. There is no excitement. Hopkins' clumsy script simply bumbles its way past plot holes into predictabilities.

Most everything about this movie is predictable within the first few minutes ...

Hopkins managed a genuine delight a few years ago with "Last Chance Harvey," starring Thompson and Dustin Hoffman as two late-in-life lovers in London. But his new script has none of that wit.

A good-natured if strenuously wacky caper comedy about a divorced British couple who plot a diamond heist to save their pensions.

Audience Reviews for The Love Punch

Well, its got all the right stuff, which is to say talent in the form of a great cast, and the intention is maybe okay, maybe a kinda modern day update on The Thin Man series of classic Hollywood days. It only lacks a decent script. There is no lively dialogue, not even funny dialogue. You watch Thompson and Brosnan, obvious favorites, and wait for the sparkle, the shine, the ha-cha-cha ... but it never arrives. In the end its simply a missed opportunity. Sad.

A tremendously enjoyable and feel-good romantic comedy caper that's filled with huge laughs and great chemistry from its wonderful four leads. Emma Thompson and Pierce Brosnan are simply brilliant together, they have such funny and gorgeous chemistry that looks so natural and honest. Timothy Spall and Celia Imria are a blast. These four outstanding artist have never been funnier and are solid joy. An exciting, hilarious and wickedly entertaining movie. I absolutely loved this film. It's smart, compelling and refreshingly energetic. A good natured, wacky, screw-ball caper that you will want to watch again. 95 minutes of fun that you don't want to pass up. A comedy that packs real comedic punch.
