Unlikely as it seems, Dafoe and Pattinson have given us one of the oddest, craziest and tenderest on-screen couples of the year.

The Lighthouse has echoes of Melville and Lovecraft as well as Coleridge and Greek mythology, all stirred together in a psychedelic stew, or a cup of turpentine and honey. The honey is the film's sumptuous aesthetic.

[Its] style-over-substance aesthetic seems to treat surrealism as just a simple horror technique rather than a psychological tool - and the result is eerie but feels somehow more shallow than The Witch.

The Lighthouse can be enjoyed on dual levels - as a thickly atmospheric exercise in psychological terror, or as a compendium of seafaring legends, jokes and clichés.
