The King is a 140-minute self-serious slog with decent set pieces, a great slate of actors playing poorly written characters, and possessing little to fill an empty shell of a screenplay.

As much as I enjoyed The King, the overbearing thought I had was this: do we really need another dark, edgy period adaptation of the Henriad?

Ultimately, The King possesses a few intriguing elements, but it just isn't as interesting or powerful as you'd expect.

While it's too uneven to recommend, the performances by Timothée Chalamet and Robert Pattinson make the film worth catching at some point on the streaming service.

"The King" lacks the wow factor of something akin to "Gladiator" and you watch desperately waiting for something to elevate the straightforward, though inventive, narrative, and try as this exceptional cast does, "The King" leaves much to be desired.

Unless you consider yourself a history buff, consider this a royal misstep.

The sum of its individually compelling parts don't quite add up.

The King is so laden with the trappings of profundity and prestige that in the end, it smothers itself to death.

[The King] is filled with macho posturing about war and kingship and the nature of power and how really, it's extremely virtuous to be extremely boring, and there is hardly any sense of humor to be found onscreen at all.

If you are a bigger fan of the genre, there might be more to enjoy, but for me, The King felt long and tonally confused. None of the performances are bad, but Timothée Chalamet does not stand out as much as he should in this central and classic role.

Most of The King works but lead Timothée Chalamet comes out as the weakest link.

Moments where interest is snatched from the jaws of boredom come just often enough to keep you from switching to one of Netflix's many other offerings, but it's not enough to recommend starting The King in the first place.

The King isn't bad enough to be a black mark on Chalamet's record, but it's disappointingly forgettable.

Separate from Shakespeare's influence, The King doesn't quite work. Its greatest strength is its visual language, which focuses on the tedium of war.
October 13, 2019
It looks incredible and has the best character actors money can buy. But Timothee Chalamet as Henry V doesn't quite live up to expectations, giving a muted performance when something deeper was needed.

Stately and serene, The King is a rather demanding period drama that is given a necessary jolt of adrenaline by a truly anarchic Robert Pattinson performance.

Ultimately, this film is an exercise in "I wish they would have done or tried this..."

The result is a monotonous film in all its lines. [Full review in Spanish]

All this is to say that, yes, Pattinson really is the only reason to watch The King. In a film that takes itself so SO seriously, he decided to have a little fun. His performance as the Dauphin is not necessarily what you'd call "good."
