Dakota Johnson, who was so good in The Peanut Butter Falcon, is an anchor here-and not in a good way. There's nothing memorable about her performance.

Both entirely disposable and frustrating because of how much potential there is in these ideas. But better developed characters and a few less twists could have made this for a more resonant experience.

The irony of this movie being called The High Note is that there aren't too many highlights for this film, when it comes to authenticity, laugh-out-loud humor or outstanding original songs.

Like Ganatra's "Late Night," the visually-sharp film assumes merely having women in leading roles is a sufficient substitute for a script that has them do much of note.

A tighter plot, less clichéd dialogue, a less predictable outcome, more effective comedy and less superficiality (or more drama and fewer flat attempts at humor), would've helped lift this film to reach its highest notes.

The High Note ends up hitting a nearly consistent low note, which ultimately comes down to a mostly lifeless formulaic structure.

To love underdog moxie, or any moxie for that matter, you have to have it, and the flimsy Dakota Johnson doesn't.

The High Note is worth watching, and can pass as middling, cotton-candy fluff. It just leaves an awful lot on the table.

While it shines a necessary light on the difficulty faced by women, especially women of color, to attain or retain agency and equality in any industry, it's prizing of a white, privileged perspective cancels out its potential.

This is Ganata's second film in a row that operates as an industry fantasy, sanding down edges when it should be poking holes.

One of the biggest problems with The High Note is that, believe it or not, Davis (Ross) is not the lead character of the story .

Everything here wraps up as tidily as it does in your average Hallmark Channel movie.

The result isn't ingrained in any kind of reality, it's pure fantasy-making.

The High Note is either a light-hearted and likeable fantasy of the LA music industry, or a white-washed, clueless and resolutely tone-deaf take on the same. Over to you.

Nisha Ganatra's movie is split between two stories, and fails to do justice to either one.

"The High Note" makes you feel good, in parts, but as far as rom-coms go it's a B-side.
