At its best, The Artist is a triumphantly modern silent film, which shows the influence of Fritz Lang, Josef von Sternberg, and Frank Borzage but never looks like a relic.

Movies don't get much more ebullient, charming, and heart-skippingly cute than the romantic comedy The Artist.

[Director Michel Hazanavicius'] extensive research and efforts to ensure that The Artist is a respectable homage to silent cinema is admirable... it was a labour of love that was well worth the time.

From its pitch-perfect performances by actors Jean Dujardin and Bérénice Bejo to the snappy and sentimental score by Ludovic Bource, when all is said and done The Artist will be as admired as Charlie Chaplin's City Lights and F.W. Murnau's Sunrise.

That spirit of generosity may be the most admirable quality of "The Artist," emphasis on spirit.

It's a (mostly) silent film that pays a stunning tribute to the genre, while telling a compelling, almost existential story.
