The Accountant (2016)

Critic Consensus: The Accountant writes off a committed performance from Ben Affleck, leaving viewers with a scattershot action thriller beset by an array of ill-advised deductions.

Movie Info

Christian Wolff (Ben Affleck) is a math savant with more affinity for numbers than people. Behind the cover of a small-town CPA office, he works as a freelance accountant for some of the world's most dangerous criminal organizations. With the Treasury Department's Crime Enforcement Division, run by Ray King (J.K. Simmons), starting to close in, Christian takes on a legitimate client: a state-of-the-art robotics company where an accounting clerk (Anna Kendrick) has discovered a discrepancy involving millions of dollars. But as Christian uncooks the books and gets closer to the truth, it is the body count that starts to rise.

Critic Reviews for The Accountant

At least, in its determinedly populist way, this violent character study makes you think.

November 9, 2016 | Rating: 3/5 | Full Review…

A fantastically convoluted, over-extended but watchable action thriller whose many dangling loose ends, subplots and side characters are finally tied up with a showy flourish.

November 3, 2016 | Rating: 3/5 | Full Review…

The Accountant boasts an appealing central performance from the redoubtable Ben Affleck, but is elsewhere lumbered with sluggish pacing, a surfeit of narrative detail, implausible coincidences, [and] tension-deflating flashbacks.

The one equation it never manages to balance is the one that says making a film about Asperger's Syndrome being more or less a superpower equals a rip-roaring and completely non-problematic jape.

This cast deserves better than a faux-'70s action thriller. Tedious and forgettable.

Sadly, Kendrick has little to do in the film's second half, which gets bogged down in a pointlessly complicated plot, much of it relayed in an especially clumsy flashback just before the climax.

Audience Reviews for The Accountant

The Accountant is bolstered by its intricate character played by Affleck as well as its sophisticated tropes and reveals. While its plot may be a bit too extensive and prolong the film still supplies the drama and efforts of being more than solid. 4/5

As diverting as "The Accountant" may be as a mild thriller, Affleck's portrayal of an autistic genius is perhaps less convincing that Keanu Reeves' portrayal of Richard III might be had we the misfortune to have it inflicted upon us. I am personally convinced that Anna Kendrick had the impression throughout the film that she was reprising her role in "Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates" -- but with math. As for Jon Bernthal, he would have been well advised to embrace his "Walking Dead" fate rather than attempt career resurrection with this film. "The Accountant" isn't well acted or directed and barely merits the two hours lost in your life.

It's a popular movie cliche anymore, one guy against armies of other guys, again. This time our guy is a misunderstood nerd who's military dad trains him to fight back, which is a nice touch (with a tip of the hat to Batman). Not bad.
