This medical mystery kissed by the fantastical and supernatural is a hybrid high wire act but Aja maintains balance.

The picture is like an onion. There are layers here, and beneath them more layers.

Ably considers the resonant interplay between things that cannot possibly be and things that should never be.

A mildly compelling thriller with a solid cast.

Max Minghella's screenplay adaptation of the novel by Liz Jensen is intelligent and sensitive, negotiating the mystery, suspense and supernatural fantasy elements in a story that is grimly realistic at its sad heart.

The aesthetics of a television melodrama, a pastiche that wants to be more ingenious than it really can. [Full Review in Spanish]

There was potential for The 9th Life of Louis Drax to be something more than it is, but it just holds itself back in so many different ways.

A confused, misanthropic mess from start to finish, the gorgeous to look at and admittedly well performed adult fantasy The 9th Life of Louis Drax doesn't make a lick of emotional or logical sense.

Alexandre Aja's film has several flaws, but at least it's pleasantly odd.

There's no doubt the film has its problems, but director Alexandre Aja always ensures it has style, if not much substance.

Despite its pretensions, The 9th Life of Louis Drax is not hard to figure out, and no amount of beautifully lit dream imagery makes up for a recycled whodunit.
October 10, 2016
The film promises a fabulous twist that never comes, and delivers instead some cutesy magical realist touches (lots of interior boy brain stuff) and a palpable lack of chemistry between Dornan and Gadon.

The 9th Life of Louis Drax could not be more appropriately titled, not only because it has gone through many incarnations before its September 2 arrival in theaters but because it seems to contain the ghosts of many films.
September 8, 2016
The film is too busy weaving in and out of its many narrative through lines for any [metaphors] to resonate as deeply as they should.

So good in Indignation and other recent efforts, Gadon is lost in a part that buffets her between wounded saint and vertiginous femme fatale.
September 7, 2016
Louis Drax shoves magic and monsters into a story that's already overpacked with grindhouse violence, a police procedural, a queasy romance, and incoherent social commentary.
September 4, 2016
The tonal shifts between oddball quirkiness and potboiler cliché are never satisfactorily patched over, and when the ending rolls around, you might think you've been watching a spoof version of 'If I Stay.'

I admire Aja for trying to stretch beyond his comfort zone, but that admiration does not extend to my telling you to buy a ticket.

Intriguing, with a fine finish. But clumsy and utterly lacking in suspense every step of the way.

A dopey psychological thriller that combines elements of "The Sixth Sense" with an overbearing sentimentality, "The 9th Life of Louis Drax" flat-lines from beginning to end.
